DOMAINE MOURGUY

Pierre Mourguy is a winemaker and donkey breeder in the Pyrenees. The Irouléguy vineyard dates back to antiquity. He is the heir of a story linked to the pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela.
Domaine Mourguy is the expression of a family's attachment to its roots. Located in the heart of the Basque Country, in the town of Ispoure, near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, it covers an area of 9 hectares. The vines are cultivated, mainly on narrow terraces facing south, southwest, winding up the side of the Arradoy mountain at an altitude of 660 m. This exposure makes the work of the soil and the vineyard slow and difficult. As for the terroir, the soils are mostly made from red sandstone. The grounds are rocky and poor, where the vines are happy. The region has an ocean-like climate characterized by rainfall throughout the year, mild winters and hot summers. Due to its relative distance from the ocean and the protection of the mountain ranges, the wine-growing area benefits from mild, sunny days in late summer and early autumn. These conditions allow Tannat, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon to mature in a beautiful way. Tannat is an indigenous grape variety from the South-West known for its tannic richness and its aromatic palette with touches of cherry and spices.

The Mourguy family welcome you all year round in their gîte and guest rooms. In fine weather, walks with donkeys will enchant you. A traditional wooden pack, as well as maps and itineraries are provided to you. Holidaymakers have several marked trails to choose from through the terraced vineyards, the forest or even the pastoral zone in mid-mountain. The donkey carries the luggage and / or the children. And of course, for all wine lovers, upon returning from the walk, you will taste the property's wines.
